CAF Champions League: Fans Trouble Mars Al Ahly Win

Police was forced to fire tear gas to disperse rowdy fans at the Stade Hammadi Agrebi in Rades before kickoff of the CAF Champions League semifinal first leg encounter between hosts Esperance and Al Ahly.

CAF had approved the attendance of 5000 supporters for the match, and the other semifinal clash between Wydad (Morocco) and Kaizer Chiefs (South Africa).

However, reports say that over 5000 fans were permitted entry and police responded with tear gas.

Both teams players left the pitch during warm-ups as they struggled to breathe.

The match, in Rades in Tunisia, was initially scheduled to kick-off at 16h00 GMT but kickoff was delayed for an hour.

The match was later settled by Mohamed Sherif who scored a 66th minute to hand visiting Al Ahly a 1-0 deserved first leg victory.

In the other game, Samir Nurkovic scored the only goal of the game as Kaizer Chiefs beat hosts Wydad Cassablanca.

The second legs will be played on 26 June 2021 with a place in this year’s CAF Champions League final at stake.
