Federation of Uganda Football Association is engaging the government for a leeway to conclude the 2020/21 Uganda Premier League season.
The season was put on hold after Government announced a national lockdown due to increase in number of confirmed Covid cases in recent weeks.
The league still has three match-days, not to mention the three games still to be played on matchday 27, to conclude.
FUFA remains positive that the league will have a natural ending.
“We are telling government that look, we are a group of people that have control of our people, we played in closed environments, we can still play the league last rounds,” FUFA boss Moses Magogo said while appearing on NTV Pessbox on Monday night.
“We need only two weeks and at the end of that we can wait for the next months as we plan (for next season). And we hope that Government listens to us, it will be something very good, if it doesnt, we do not have powers over that we shall still come up and do decisions for the interim.”
Whether the said two weeks are enough to conclude the season, remains another debate.
Many, including FUFA third Vice President Nakiwala Kiyingi, have asked FUFA to trigger a force majeure clause as it was the case last season. The movs will see Express FC awarded the title.
Few sectors were allowed to operate and Magogo says that Football should as well be considered because they have built a clean reputation in managing SOPs.
He stated: “With due respect to all other cores of economic activities of this country, football itself is run by a federation, we know where to be found, we have rules, we have really shown that we respect the SOPs.
“We have played 33 international matches since Covid19 started and we have only seven cases reported across. As football we have gone for international matches, both tournaments and individual matches and we have been able to come through because we have hired two fulltime doctors to just look after we have house in Kisasi where we take the cases for isolation. These are means we have put in place to make sure that we have the bubbles.”
The League title is yet to be decided – Express are just one and two points above URA and Vipers respectively.
Two of the three relegations slots have already been determined (MYDA and Kitara), with one of Kyetume, Busoga United or Onduparaka still contenders also to go down.
The Uganda Cup was at the semifinal stage while Big League is awaiting the playoffs.
