Uganda Cranes Custodian Ismail Watenga is a huge doubt to feature at this year’s CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup.
The former Vipers SC netminder, plying his trade with South African PSL side Chippa United, was amongst the 40-man provisional squad that was summoned by coach Morely Byekwaso to prepare for the tournament.
Him, fellow goalkeeper Charles Lukwago, Said Kyetume, Yunus Ssetamu and Murshid Jjuuko made the cast of overage players that were included in a squad dominated by U-20 National team players. Three out the foresaid five are supposed to make the final squad.
However, by look of proceedings, club commitments are likely to sideline Watenga out the tournament.
Watenga’s Chilli Boys are currently fighting to survive relegation in Promotion/relegation play-offs that are expected to run untill 30th June with just two days to the CECAFA tournament proper.
The tournament is slated to start on 3rd July and the custodian literally can’t travel with the rest of the team.
The situation means that Coach Byekwaso will have to choose from the remaining cast of Saidi Keni, Dennis Otim, Hassan Matovu, Eric Kibowa and Charles Lukwago.
The Cranes are currently camping at Paradise Hotel Kisaasi but their preparations have been greatly disrupted by the current Covid19 country wide lock down.
