Decolas Kiiza: FUFA Wants League To End Sportingly

FUFA Deputy CEO Decolas Kiiza has stated that FUFA doesnot intend to announce the league champions off the field.

Kiiza, while on 94.4 Radio Sapienta, also provided updates about the national team preparations ahead of the CECAFA tournament in Ethiopia.

Last season, Vipers were announced the league winners after sport was suspended because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I think we did not announce Vipers as the league champions immediately after the first 21 days of lockdown and I remember that we took sometime to decide,” said Kiiza.

“We made the decision in the middle of the second lockdown after more 21 days were announced. Its not true that we decided immediately after we were locked down last year.”

“We do not intend to declare the winners off the field. We want to make sure that every winner is named according to what they put up in the field.”

Last week, President Museveni revoked his decision of allowing sports to continue without fans which forced FUFA to postpone the remaining fixtures.

“By the time when the President announced a 42-day lockdown, we were left with 27 league matches. And we said no, why dont we engage the government to allow us finish the remaining matches.

He added that FUFA will make decision after government have responded to their request of allowing them to continue with the league.

FUFA has asked Government for two weeks to complete the season.

“So we have not yet ruled out what we did last year but we are not in the situation we were in then.”

Recently, FUFA extended the player registration window for CAF interclub competitions to August 15 which gives FUFA more time and hope to have the league have a natural ending.

Last week, FUFA summoned the squad that will represent Uganda in the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup scheduled for July 3 in Ethiopia.

However, the players are ready in camp but are yet to start training.

“As I told you we had submitted our request because president’s directives suspended sports,” Kiiza revealed.

“So that is one of the things we have tabled and we hope to get feedback as soon as possible.

“But the team is already in the camp, they are expected to depart for Ethiopia on Wednesday next week on June 30th and the tournament will begin on 3rd July.”
