Magogo On Express and FUFA Decision To End Season

FUFA President Moses Magogo has opened up on decision to prematurely end the 2020/21 Uganda Premier League season.

The decision came after Sports was banned due to Covid19, with four matchdays still on the cards for the title contending teams.

FUFA had earlier written to Government asking for at least two weeks to play out the season under strict observance of SOPs.

This Tuesday, the FUFA Emergency Executive Committee triggered Article 18, Section 1, Sub-section C & D of the FUFA Competition rules to end the season.

“No body knows Covid, you cannot predict tomorrow. We thought we could end the season sportingly as planned, but what happens, another wave which is even much worse than before,” Magogo said during an interview with Next Radio.

“So, we went back to the rules. Temember at first, sports was allowed to continue in the first lockdown, but later it was closed completely.”

Express, who were top of the log, were declared champions. URA and Vipers were a point and two in that order, behind the leaders.

The decision also saw Kyetume join MYDA and Kitara down to Big League.

“Of course there was a chance for the three teams to take the trophy, and a chance for Kyetume to survive,” he added.

“But like I have said, we wanted the the League to end sportingly, we made attempts with the government, but the Process-Making of the government was taking longer.

“However to make the decision, even in the executive it was a debate, there were so many other variations in thinking but at the end of the day we made the decision. Clubs were also writing to us, telling us to end the league.”

The decision triggered excitement at Wankulukuku as the club won their first league title since 2012.

“Congratulations to Express FC, we give credit where it is due, I didn’t see this happening.”

“We had a discussion with the Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka (Express chairman) and I told him that I didn’t see them winning the title. He was confident about their title chances though I kept that they were to win the league in two or three years time. And this was about two years ago at Silver Springs in Bugoloobi.”

“I am excited as the President of a Football Association, you would like the fans clubs to be winning the league. But it has not come accidentally, it has come from a lot of hard work from the coaches, players, Management.

“A sporting result is a combination of a number of elements.”
