Djibouti Bans Signing Foreign Goalkeepers

The Djbouti Football Federation has banned clubs from signing foreign goalkeepers, its official.

From 2023/24 season, no Djiboutian club will be allowed to sign foreign goalkeepers.

The move is intended to promote national goalkeepers in the country.

Djibouti joins Egypt who also banned foreign goalkeepers way back in 2011 in an attempt to solve a “goalkeeping crisis”.

The letter from Djibouti Football Federation General Secretary Youssouf Ahmed Mahamoud reads in part:

“Following the meeting of the Executive Committee on May 10, 2021 and in order to strengthen our clubs so that they are competitive at the level of “Regional and international” competitions, it was noted the lack of national goalkeepers within clubs and national teams

“Also, it is decided the non-recruitment of foreign goalkeepers from the Sports Season 2023/2024: Moreover, it is imperative that the Presidents of the clubs take all the necessary measures to promote national goalkeepers.

“This circular will be applicable to the National Championship from the 2023/2024 season Sportive. Please take note of this information.”

Djibouti, whose national team is nicknamed Shoremen of the Red Sea, are ranked 183rd per FIFA Rankings of May 27, 2021.

The country has never played at World Cup or AFCON Finals tournament.
