We are Targeting a Haul of medals – Sports Minister Obua

The State Minister for sports Hon. Denis Hamson Obua has admitted that their target is win a haul of record medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Obua, who is the head of delegation to the coveted games made the remarks at the Sports Unlimited show on Sanyu FM on Saturday.

On Friday July 9th, 2021, the Olympics bond contingent was officially flagged-off for the at the Kololo Independence Ceremonial grounds by President Yoweri Museveni.

The fountain of honor, in his parting remarks, argued the athletes not to “embarrass the nation” and stay disciplined on and off the track.

Uganda will be part of the 206 countries that are going to participate to the postponed games , which will be held from July 23 to August 8.

For the first time in history, Uganda will field the biggest number of females, 13 to be exact, and 12 men, something Obua says puts Uganda in good stead.

“This is a very unique olympic to team Uganda but not only unique to team Uganda but all participating countries that have qualified.

“On our side as team Uganda it is unique in a sense that we are making history that since 1972, this is the biggest contingent of both the olympic athletes and paralympic athletes that have Qualified. It is also unique that for the first time, the number of female athletes who have qualified combined are more than the male counterparts.”

He added “We believe that all these factors combined ,we have talked to the athletes, told them the new rules, new protocols under the olympic and para olympics games that may touture some of them psychologically, talked to people who are appearing for the first time, we have prepared the number and even set our target.

The State Minister for Sports adds on that their target is to better on the current record medal that Uganda holds.

“Our target is to beat the record of all time in terms of medal ranking of Uganda and we are looking at gold as our first priority. You see in our 59 years of Independence we only have two gold medals at the level of Olympics.

But we are confident by the grace of God, we should be able to pick more than what we have in stock at the level of Olympics. We pray the team to compete favorably at the Olympics.”

The Olympic Games were earlier scheduled to take place in 2020 but later postponed due to the out break of the Coronavirus pandemic in the world.

It will be the second time the Olympics will be held in Tokyo, which previously hosted the Games in 1964.
For the Paralympics, they are scheduled to take place August 24 to September 5, 2021.
