Uganda Kobs coach Morley Byekwaso has revealed the reasons behind the exclusion of some of the players in the named team for Cecafa U23 championship.
Byekwaso confirmed the 23-man squad to Ethiopia that has since raised a big debate.
From the team that featured in a training camp in Saudi Arabia, five players have been dropped. These are Saidi Kyeyune, Eric Kibowa, Hassan Matovu, Isma Mugulusi and Richard Basangwa.
Byekwaso says that Basangwa returned a positive Covid19 test while Mugulusi is nursing an injury.
“The players have prepared well since including that trip to Saudi Arabia,” Byekwaso stated.
“We have been preparing to fulfill our objectives unfortunately we have some injured players.
“Richard Basangwa tested positive for Covid-19. Our playmaker Isma Mugulusi has a knee problem and he is ruled out for 2 to 3 months, so those two are out yet they have been great pillars in our team but we think those who are there will replace them to see that our country comes out victorious.”
Defender Gavin Kizito, goalkeepers Saidi Keni and Denis Otim are the new inclusions.
The Tournament will kickoff on July 17th in Bahr Dar in Ethiopia.
Uganda is pitted in Group A alongside Tanzania and guests DR Congo.
“Our group is strong because we have DR Congo who have good players and it’s a football country,” Byekwaso weighed in.
“We also have Tanzania, so I think our group is a group of Death.”
