Preview

Uganda will get their CECAFA U23 campaign underway with a tricky fixture against DR Congo on Sunday.

The tournament kicked off on Saturday with a 3-3 draw between hosts Ethiopia and Eritrea at the Bahir Dar Stadium.

Uganda is the tournamen’s record winners and defending champions having beaten Eritrea 3-0 in Kampala in 2019.

However, the organisers have since decided to play the tournament at an Under-23 level. Teams will be allowed to include a maximum of three over-age players in their squads.

Uganda’s team consists of largely the side that won the Cecafa U20 tournament in December last year.

That team, coached by Morley Byekwaso, went on to reach the final of the AFCON U20 Championship in Mauritania, with Derrick Kakooza finishing as the tournament’s top scorer.

Back to this year’s CECAFA U23, Uganda are pitted in Group A that also has Tanzania and guests DR Congo.

The top team will qualify to the knockout stage. The format of this tournament will see one best runner-up from the three groups also reach the quarterfinal.

Originally the tournament was meant to start on July 3rd, but the CECAFA members requested that kick-off is moved to July 17th.

DR Congo pose a big challenge but Uganda’s senior team beat their counterparts 2-0 in 2019 AFCON finals in Egypt.
