Uganda Rugby Cranes remained top of Pool C despite a shock defeat against minnows Algeria on Sunday.

Brian Makalama’s side fell 16-22 against the Desert Warriors at Kyadondo Rugby Ground in the last game of Pool C of the Rugby Africa Cup.

The Rugby Cranes looked a different side from the team that scored eight tries against Ghana last Saturday.

Tries from Brian Odongo and Adrian Kasito had seen Uganda erase Algeria’s early lead but even a second half penalty conversion from Maxwell Ebonga was not enough to avoid Algeria from turning tables.

The result, which will see Uganda fall in rankings, sees Uganda top Pool C on points difference.

Notably, Uganda has qualified to the 2022 Rugby Africa Cup which is a continued pathway to the 2023 Rugby Africa Cup.

The Rugby Cranes will face rivals and neighbours Kenya after the Simbas finished second in Group B which was topped by Senegal.

Algeria finish second and will face Senegal while Ghana will return home empty handed having finished bottom of Pool C.

The 2022 Rugby Africa will pit together eight teams, top two from each of the four groups from the 2021 Rugby Africa Cup. The games will be played on a knockout basis with the overall qualifying to the World Cup in France.
