Confederation of African Football ( CAF) has backed the staging of the World Cup every two years from the definite five years, according to President Patrice Motsepe.
Motsepe said CAF firmly supports the proposal put forward by Saudi Arabia at last month’s Fifa Congress.
“The highest body of Caf deemed it necessary to express it’s support for that excellent resolution,” the South African said in the aftermath of last Friday’s Executive Committee meeting in Morroco.
“Taking into account the serious financial challenges, lack of infrastructure and facilities, African Football could probably be the biggest beneficiaries of the world cup every two years.”
With the Africa Cup of Nations also staged on a biennial basis, Motsepe failed to explain how Africa would be able to feature at both the World Cup and Nations Cup, and their respective qualifying campaigns.
Africa is hopeful the move will boost FIFA’s coffers with the finances trickling down to the member associations.
