The Minister of Sports, Youth and Leisure in the Buganda Kingdom, Owek. Henry Ssekabembe has revealed the 2021 Masaza Cup edition will be staged.

Due to Covid-19 outbreak farce, the 2020 Masaza cup tournament was rescheduled and played earlier this year in a tournament format at the Fufa Technical Centre in Njeru.

Gomba emerged evetuntal champions champions after beating Buddu in the finals played at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

While speaking to the press, Owek. Sekabembe talked at length the Kingdom’s readiness to stage the prestigious tournament.

“The kingdom through our committee for the Masaza cup are doing everything possible to see that we have the Masaza cup 2021. And if all goes per plan, we shall address to our ministers, then after address to whole of Buganda.”

Despite the global pandemic, the Euro tournament and Copa America has seen the return of fans to the stadiums. Some European countries have emphasised massive vaccination of the Citizens and are now going back to normal in a staggered manner.

And Sekabembe says that concerned authorities should borrow a leaf from the foresaid countries.

“There is one thing I want to address to all the sports fraternity and the Federations, plus everyone who wishes to see this country move forward. We have seen that in Europe, the Euro 2020 concluded peacefully even Copa America was played.

“So what have these People done. Their strength and emphasis was put on vaccination of the people that’s why they have started opening up.”

He added “So as sports men, we need to raise our voices through the Federations, sports men and Ugandans to ask the government through the parliament to put emphasis on Vaccination.

The minister adds that if such measures are put in place, sports will be able to resume in the country.

“If that is done, sports will be able to return and all games will be back again. But if that is not done, we shall still remain in this situation. We shall always open up for a while and then go back to a lockdown.

“We ask you the youth, I know it’s a hard time but you can also ask the government to do massive vaccination so that we can go back t normal, schools also have sports to open up as well.

“So I ask the government and parliament to put emphasis on Vaccination. And as Buganda we are ready to follow sops put by the ministry of health to reopen our competitions and I hope we shall able to open up with in this year.”
