Olympics: Uganda’s Boxers Learn Opponents

Olympics Boxing Draw Sheet Round of 32:
*Welterweight: Shadir Musa Bwogi (gets a bye)
*Flyweight: Catherine Nanziri Vs Namiki Tsukimi (Japan)
*Middleweight: David Ssemujju Vs Younes Nemouchi (Algeria)


Bombers captain Shadir Musa Bwogi, Uganda’s welterweight champion, has received a bye to the round of 16.

He will have to compete in division different from the one he expected.

He will be in action on July 29 at the round of 16 to face winner between Sotomaya Colazo Lorenzo (Azerbaijan) and Madiev Eskerkhan (Georgia).

The Flyweight champion in the womens category, Catherine Nanziri, will be the first Ugandan boxer in the ring on Sunday 25th July taking on Japanese Namiki Tsukimi in the preliminary round.

Namiki who will be Nanziri’s first opponent has 15 amateur fight with 12 wins and 3 losses.

Nanziri came number four in Africa after Rabab Cheddar of Morocco, Roumaysa Boulam of Algeria and Christine Ongare of Kenya who beat her in the box off.

She is the first Ugandan female boxer to represent the country at the Olympics games.

A win for Nanziri will pit her against Sousa Grazielle of Brazil who received a bye at the round of 32.

Ssemujju Kavuma David (28yrs) will face African top bloom Younes Nemouchi of Algeria, who defeated him in the Semifinal in Dakar.

Ssemujju is joint-fifth in the World men’s middleweight rankings and second in Africa with 300 points.

This will be their third time Ssemujju and Algerian Nemouchi meet – In 2019, Ssemujju defeated the Algerian during their first meeting at the 2019 All African Games in Morocco before the Algerian got his revenge at last year’s Africa Olympic Boxing qualifiers in Dakar with a split decision victory.

He later secured a spot at the Tokyo Olympics through the IOC boxing task force rankings.

Ssemujju represented Uganda at the Rabat Africa Games in 2019, attaining rank 2 in the middle weight category.

He also earned a ticket to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games but Unfortunately lost to Englands Luke McCormack in the Men’s 64kg round of 32.

If he overcomes the Algerian, Ssemujju will face Marcial Eumir from Philippines (got a bye) at the round of 16.

The first round of events gets underway on day one of the games on Saturday, July 24.

The first boxing gold medal will be decided on Tuesday, August 3 when the women’s featherweight final is held.

The last fights of the games will be held on Sunday, August 8 when the final four gold medal matches are contested.
