Catherine Nanziri is set to become Uganda’s first female boxer at the Olympics.

Nanziri will battle local fighter Tsukimi Namiki on Sunday, July 25 at 11:15am EAT.

This means that the Uganda’s flyweight champion will be the first member of the bombers trio to enter the ropes.

Like it was in Dakar Senegal last year, she will begin her compaign in Tokyo against a fighter from the host country.

In Senegal, she defeated then Africa’s flyweight seed number two Senegalese Timera Khadija at the quarters.

She will however have to double her efforts against more technically gifted Japan’s Tsukimi who is a soldier by profession.

“I have already studied my opponent and I am not scared at all, although she is at her home town, I am ready to outcompete her like I did to a senegalese Timera Khadija at the Africa olympic qualifier games in Dakar,” Nanziri said.

“I am so delighted to be the first member of the bombers team to enter the ring, I have prepared very well and God willing I hope to raise Uganda’s flag high.”

The boxing trio – Nanziri, Bombers captain Shadir Musa Bwogi and 2019 Silver medalist David Kavuma Ssemujju are all in pursuit of Uganda’s first Olympic medal in Boxing since John ‘The Beast’ Mugabi clinched silver in the welterweight category at the 1980 Moscow games.

Nanziri will be making her debut at the Olympics having secured her ticket through the IOC Boxing Task Force.

A medal might big of an ask for Nanziri who started her Boxing journey back in 2015 while at Aggrey Memorial College in Bunamwaya but mere stepping in the ring will inspire many young girls back home.

Nanziri has three recognised fights, which came at the Africa championship in Dakar – There, she won once and lost twice.

Tsumiki who has won 12 of her 15 amateur fights, was named the 2018 and 2019 Female Boxer of the Year by the Japan Amateur Boxing Federation.

The southpaw boxer earned her ticket to Olympics thanks to her exploits at the 2020 Asia and Oceania qualification tournament in Jordan where won silver.

Winner of this bout will face Brazil’s Sousa Grazielle who received a bye at the round of 32.

Still To Come:

On Monday, July 26, Ssemujju will be in the ring to take on Algerian Younes Nemouchi at 12:18pm EAT seeking for a revenge having lost to him at the Africa Olympic Qualifier games in Dakar Senegal.

Also bombers captain Shadir Musa Bwogi now knows his opponent at the round of 16 and he will take on 2016 Olympic Silver Medalist that is Georgia’s Eskerkhan Madiev who won by RSC in round one against Cuban-born Lorenzo.
