Bad Day at Office – Byekwaso After CECAFA U23 Exit

Uganda U23 head coach Morley Byekwaso has admitted that it was a ‘bad day at office’ as his Kobs side drew with Tanzania to crush out of this year’s CECAFA tournament.

The kobs failed to over come neighbors Tanzania in the game the former were supposed to win to remain in contention.

Striker Steven Mukwala scored the only goal for the Kobs while Israel Sospeter with the other for Tanzania.

Despite being regarded as favourite for the tournament favourites basing on the records, Uganda put up another below par performance and couldn’t go past group stages.

Prior, they had played to a goalless draw against guests DRC in their opener.

And Byekwaso says lady luck didn’t smile for his charges.
“It has not been an easy game but the boys put up a good fight, they did everything but most times football is about luck. I think the day wasn’t ours, Byekwaso stated.”

Uganda will again rue missed chances in a game they needed nothing but victory to seal a place in the semi finals.

Earlier in the first half, they missed a golden opportunity to get off the mark as Mukwala missed from the spot.

More chances kept on coming their way, but the Byekwaso coached side couldn’t take take control of the contest.

“We got many chances in the first half and we even got a penalty but we failed to convert it, that caused fear amongst the boys.

In the second half, we tried to get back into the game, tried put up a good fight, with determination. That’s football if it’s not your chance, it is not yours.”

He added ” I think it was a tough group. when you see our group had tough teams, everyone was strong but the one with a better chance went through.”

The result meant that Uganda finished second in a three-team Group A with two points while Tanzania topped the group with four sealed a place in the semis.

All they have left is to play for placement games as they will play DR Congo on July 26 for rankings.

“We now have to go back and play the game for rankings, to get a better position and also prepare these boys that can join the senior team that will represent Uganda in the World Cup Qualifiers.”

In the semi finals, Tanzania will be up against South Sudan while Burundi and Kenya face off in the other semifinal that will be played on July 27.
