Uganda Kobs will be fighting for places when they face DR Congo on Monday in the ongoing CECAFA U23.

The Kobs finished second in Group A following back to back draws against DR Congo and Tanzania.

It meant that the Kobs missed out on a place in the semifinals – Only the top team in each of the three groups, and one best runner up, were needed to complete the semifinal puzzle.

After drawing with guests DR Congo last Sunday, the Kobs needed nothing but victory against Tanzania to top the group.

Steven Mukwala missed a penalty and later scored an equaliser after Tanzania took the lead through Israel Sospeter.

The Kobs, who were favourites, huffed and puffed but could not find a late winner before the referee put an end to the game.

Morley Byekwaso (Head Coach, Uganda) said after the game on Saturday: “I thank the boys because of the fighting spirit they have showed in the two matches.”

“We created several scoring chances in this tournament, but did not use them well. But it’s a good experience for my young team as we still have two more classification matches.”

“We need to prepare our teams for the future and this tournament is good to try out players.”

Djibouti, who were ranked ninth out of the nine-team tournament after the group stages, packed and went back home.

The semifinal places went to Tanzania, South Sudan, Burundi and Kenya.

After failing to progress to the semis, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Uganda and DR Congo will be fighting for rankings 5th to 8th.

Winner between Uganda and DR Congo will meet winner between Ethiopia and Eritrea to determine who takes the fifth place.

“We are expecting a tough game. We have been in a group of death. We have to play to our best to get a good position and ranking,” said Byekwaso ahead of Monday game.

Byekwaso also hinted on ringing changes to the team that will start the Monday game.
