President Museveni Re-opens Sports, With Restrictions

After a 42-day shutdown, Sport in Uganda will resume behind closed doors provided strict conditions are met, President Museveni said on Friday in a national address.

Sport was suspended in Uganda on June 18 in response to a hike in coronavirus cases.

The President has only given greenlight to Outdoor Sports to resume, and without spectators.

The International and local accredited sports events are allowed under strict observance of SOPs.

This means that no spectators, mandatory testing of players and officials within 72 hours of the event.

Outdoor individual sport activities are allowed under strict observance of SOPs.

Indoor sports activities including gyms, pool tables remain closed.

Gaming and betting remain closed. Casinos, theaters and Cinemas including Bibanda remain closed.

What happened during lockdown?

During the shutdown, a number of Sports activities were halted including the Uganda Premier League which was suspended and later ended when FUFA triggered a force majeure.

The National Basketball League (and lower divisions) were also called off while Pearl of Africa Rally (motorsport) was cancelled.

However, some activities like the Rugby Africa Cup was held successfully at Kyadondo Rugby grounds.

Also, Athletes who were preparing for the Tokyo Olympics, were permitted to train for the games then.

Away from Sports:

Curfew has been maintained at 7pm, Boda bodas allowed to move up to 6pm, with one passenger only, Schools remain closed while Public transport open at 50% capacity. Private vehicles can move across districts with only 3 occupants. Movement in and out of Uganda will remain open.

Malls and arcades open with strict compliance to SOPs, Burial attendees should not exceed 20, Places of worship to remain closed for 60 days, Restaurants and Salons can continue to work.

What Is Still Left in 2021?

The National Men’s Basketball team, Silverbacks, are expected to start preparations for the Afrobasket scheduled to take place between 17 and 29 August 2021.

The Rugby Sevens League is expected to kickoff at a later date.

The Stanbic Uganda Cup and FUFA Big League playoffs are still on the cards.

The new 2021/22 Uganda Premier League season will be expected to resume in less than two months time.

Uganda Boxing Federation earlier hinted on creating a new boxing league named the Boxing Champions League for the medalists of the 2019 National Open Boxing Championship

The National Cricket Over 50 League was suspended with a matchday two go, and will be expected to resume.

The National Hockey League is expected to resume as well.
