Swimmer Kirabo Namutebi Sets New National Record In 50m Freestyle

Uganda’s Swimming sensation Kirabo Namutebi broke a national record in the Women’s 50m freestyle during her Olympics debut at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 games.

Namutebi, coming in heat six, set 26.63 to erase the previous record of 26.90 she set at the 2019 FINA World Junior Championships in Budapest.

Then, the record was held by two-time Olympian Jamila Lunkuse thanks to her assault at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Its a big milestone for Kirabo who has made strong strides since her international debut at the 2015 CANA Zone IV Championship as a toddler.

On Friday, despite setting the National record, her time was not enough to progress to the next phase of the competition.

With top 16 across all 11 heats progressing to the semis, Kirabo seventh (out of eight) in heat six.

She finished 47th overall out of 81 swimmers in the heats.

The youngster, with many competitions to come, will seek to build on her Olympics debut and hope that there are many better days ahead.
