Uganda’s Middle distance duo of Winnie Nanyondo and Halimah Nakaayi have missed out on the final of the 800m at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.
Nakaayi and Nanyondo both fell short in their respective semifinal heats on Saturday.
The two needed to finish in the top two in their heats or at least claim the next 2 fastest times to advance to the Final.
Nakaayi, running in heat one, finished bottom with a time of 2:04.44 as Jamaica’s Goule Natoya and Great Britain’s Reekie Jemma claimed the two automatic qualification places.
Nakaayi lacked the sharpness that saw her take the 800m title at the IAAF World Diamond Champions in Doha two years ago with a time of 1:58.04.
It was close for Nanyondo on the other hand who lost her pace at the home stretch as Keely Hodgkinson and Wang Chunyu finished top.
The 2014 Commonwealth Bronze medallist settled for fifth place to set her season best at 1:59.84.
Nnyondoa returns in action on Monday in the Women’s 1500m heats.
