Middle distance runners Winnie Nanyondo and Halimah Nakaayi will go again as the duo target slots in the final of the 800m at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.

Both managed to secure their tickets at semifinal thanks to their time in the heats in the wee hours of Friday morning.

Nanyondo finished second after clocking 2:02.02 in her heat to qualify automatically.

World champion Nakaayi, after her 2:00.92 which saw her come fourth in heat two, took one of the six slots for the next fastest across the heats.

To reach the final, the top two in each semifinal group will reach the final and will be joined by the next two fastest athletes across the three semis.

Nakaayi has a big task to beat Jamaica’s Goule Natoya (1:59.83) and Great Britain’s Reekie Jemma (1:59.97) who qualified with the two fastest times in the heats respectively.

In fact, Natoya and Reekie are the only two athletes who ran below two minutes during the heats.

Nanyondo on the other hand, will hope to finish inside the top two in a fair field that also has Wang Chunyu and Almanza Rose Mary.
