Uganda’s middle distance runner Winnie Nanyondo returns to action in the wee hours of Monday morning at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Nanyondo, after failing to secure a place in the 800m final, will seek to make amends as she starts her quest for the elusive 1500m podium.
She will come in heat three needing to finish among the top six of the 14 to automatically reach the semis.
The next six fastest non automatic qualifiers across all the three heats also earn slots in the semis.
Work is cut out for Nanyondo who will be going head to head with defending champion Faith Kipyegon from Kenya.
Kipyegon had recently dipped in form but her 3:51.07 winning time in Monaco Diamond League this year proved doubters wrong.
In that very race, Nanyondo managed to post a time of 4:01.18. Her best time (SB) this year at the distance is 4:00.84.
Nanyondo’s lifetime best (PB) is 3:59.56 which she set in 2019 at the Rabat Diamond League and she will be asked to break the four-minute barrier once again to at least have a go to the next round.
She finished 11th in Doha Worlds two years back.
Despite managing to avoid pre event favourite Sifan Hassan (who confirmed trippling – 1500, 5000 & 10,000m) in the heat, Nanyondo’s heat three is also a strong field with Diribe Welteji (Ethiopia) who set an Ethiopian U20 record of 3:58.93 in Hengelo and Arafi Rababe from Morocco.
