Olympics: Nanyondo Finishes Outside Medal Bracket In Elite Field

Uganda’s Winnie Nanyondo finished seventh to miss out on an Olympics medal at the Women’s 1500m final on Friday.

Nanyondo, however, recorded her season best of 3:59.80 at the distance.

In a fast track, Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon defended her title in an Olympics record time of 3:53.11, Laura Muir of Great Britain took silver in a National record time of 3:54.50.

Pre-race favourite Sifan Hassan came third, clocking 3:55.86.

Australia’s Linden Hall came sixth in a personal best time.

Nanyondo’s failure to get a podium finish leaves Peruth Chemutai as the only Uganda female athlete to win a medal at Olympics ever.

Chemutai won gold in the Women’s 30000m steeplechase.

It was an improved performance for Nanyondo whose best time this year at the distance was 4:00.84 she posted at the Wanda Diamond League in Florence.

Her time on Friday, however, was just below her personal best of 3:59.56 which she set in Rabat during the 2019 Diamond League.
