Silverbacks Leave For Kigali Early Wednesday – Tentative Squad Revealed

Uganda men national basketball team, the Silvebacks, will leave in the wee hours of Wednesday to Kigali, Rwanda for the 2021 FIBA AfroBasket due August 24.

The team goes to Kigali just six days to tip of the tournament, amidst financial hardships.

FUBA President Nasser Sserunjogi received Sh340m from National Council of Sports (Government) on Monday, and reports later spilled that he used the money meant for the trip to pay back money lenders who funded the second window of qualifiers.

Uganda beat Morocco 77-65in July in Sale in a rescheduled tie as the Silverbacks booked a ticket.

The team of local-based players will leave for Kigali at 4am on Wednesday.

The five local based players are Titus Lual, Ben Komakech, James Okello, Tonny Drilleba and Jimmy Enabu who were also in Morocco.

Only one change is expected from the foreign-based legion.

Adam Seiko, a 6-4 guard from Chatsworth, California who turns out for San Diego State Aztecs in NCAA, is expected to earn his Silverbacks debut.

Mohamed Ghedi is said to be the exclusion while Robinson Opong, Ishmail Wainright, Eric Rwahire, Keiran Zziwa, John Deng Geu and Arthur Kaluma are set to join the team in Rwanda.

FUBA is yet to confirm the developments.

It is reported that the Federation has also borrowed funds to make the Kigali trip a success.

Uganda are pitted in Group D alongside Senegal, Cameroon and South Sudan.

Returning to the continental stage for a third straight attempt, the Silverbacks will be hoping for better fortunes having won one game at the competition.

They beat Zimbabwe 72-64 in the placement game to finish 15th at the 2015 Afrobasket.

*August 25: Senegal Vs Uganda, 6pm
*August 27: Uganda vs Cameroon, 12pm
*August 29: South Sudan vs Uganda, 6pm
