Joshua Cheptegei Triumphant As Chemutai Struggles In Eugene

Fresh from Olympics, five Uganda’s athletes registered mixed results as they returned on track on Saturday night in the meet at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon (United States).

Joshua Cheptegei, champion in the 5000m and silver medallist in the 10000m in Tokyo, managed to live as advertised after winning the Men’s two mile race.

Cheptegei beat rival Selemon Barega of Ethiopia who pipped him to 10,000m gold in Tokyo, to stop the clock at 8:09.55.

Cheptegei took command of the race in the closing stages and fended off resistance on home stretch in an epic finish where he started his celebrations before crossing the line.

Paul Chelimo, the 5000m bronze medallist who was running in front of the home crowd, outpaced Jacob Kiplimo to third place.

In the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase, Peruth Chemutai (9:10.87) who powered to gold in Tokyo, ran out of steam in the last lap to finish a distance seventh.

Norah Jeruto won with a World Lead, Meeting Record ans Personal Best time of 8:53.65 while Olympic silver medallist Courtney Frerichs came second (8:57.77) and followed by Hyvin Kiyeng of Kenya.

Winnie Nanyondo (4:00.72) was fourth as Faith Kipyegon (3:53.23) brilliantly eased to victory in the Women’s 1500m race in a meeting Record time.

Halimah Nakaayi (1:58.78) came sixth in a women’s 800m race won Athing Mu.

Besides Kipyegon (1500m) and Jeruto (3000m steeplechase), the duo of Noah Lyles (200m) and Dalilah Muhammad (400m hurdles) also set new Meeting Records as the track proved so fast.

The biggest highlight of the day saw Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah run the second fastest time in the women’s 100m.

Thompson who defended her 100m and 200m double in Tokyo, edged a classy field where her fellow Jamaicans Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce and Sharica Jackson completed a clean-sweep.
