*Best Athlete – Joshua Cheptegei (Long Distance Runner)

*Best Basketball Player – Ishmail Wainwright – (Silverbacks Power Forward)

*Lifetime Achievement – Peruth Chemutai (Long distance runner)


Real Stars Sports Awards issued out four accolades to sports personalities who excelled in the concluded month of August.

The Ceremony for the awards which are sponsored by Fortebet Uganda, was held on Tuesday evening at the Route256 in Lugogo.

The recipients include long distance runner Peruth Chemutai who took home the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Chemutai who won gold in the 3000m Steeplechase in Tokyo, became the first woman to clinch a medal for Uganda at the Olympics games.

Joshua Cheptegei (Athletics), Ishmail Wainright (Basketball) and Muzamir Mutyaba (Football) were the other winners – However, none of the recipients were present to receive the award due to their respective busy schedules.

Uganda Athletics Federation President Dominic Otuchet commended the initiative from Real Stars Sports which is led by Isaac Mukasa.

“These awards inspire athletes and we thank you very much for the efforts,” Otuchet stated.

“We (UAF) shall not disappoint you and we are assuring you that we are ready to go all the way. We are now trying to develop the junior athletes, those young people who are going to take over when the elite retires.”

Cheptegei who won gold (5000m) and Silver (10,000m) beat Chemutai and David Emong (Bronze at Paralympics) to the best athlete of the month of August.

Muzamir Mutyaba edged his Express FC teammates Joel Mutakubwa and Martin Kizza after a strong show in as the club won the CECAFA Kagame Cup.

Wainright, who recently signed for NBA giants Toronto Raptors, was named the best Basketball player ahead of his Silverbacks teammates Deng Geu and Adam Seiko.

Canan Soda and Jude Colour Solutions are the other sponsors for the awards.
