Uganda Premier League side KCCA FC’s new signing Innocent Wafula has expressed his delight to have made a debut for the national team despite the undesirable result.
Wafula’s chance came when he replaced team skipper Emmanuel Okwi, only to witness a dull conclusion to the much anticipated Group E second World Cup Qualifiers encounter against Mali.
The Cranes played the greater part of the second stanza with only 10 men following Murushid Juuko’s unprecedented straight red card for what looked like an elbow to Mali striker Ibrahima Kone.
“Am happy to have played my first game with the national team. It has been a very good one in my opinion and I hope for the best in the coming campaign.” He stated.
While asked about his journey, the former Mbarara player couldn’t resist thanking the coaches who helped prepare him for the games.
“I am very grateful to the coach for their help in the preparations and i promise to continue working hard so that my stay with the national team is a permanent once,” he added.
Playing at the right side of the defence, Wafula’s chance on the national team face hurdles in the likes of Nicholas Wadada, Elvis Bwomono, Enock Walusimbi and Denis Iguma.
Uganda Cranes return to action in October in a double header against Rwanda. The first game will be played on Wednesday 6th October in Kigali before a return leg in Kampala on Sunday 10th October.
It is important to note that Uganda has neither scored nor conceded a goal in the campaign and currently sits third in Group E with two points ro the good while Mali are top with four, Kenya are second and Rwanda bottom.
