Lady Jills won the 3×3 basketball tournament on Thursday as Makerere University celebrated the International day for University Sports at the Main Grounds.
Lady Jills who comprised of Okumu Giu Barbra, Wangeshi Sandra Ayikoru, Onyami Vivian Faith and Akello Irene propelled the side to deserved victory.
The side beat Makerere Sparks Team in finals with a score of 6-5.
In the Men’s division, Makerere Old Boys team of Tonny Drilleba, Asiimwe Alton and Daniel ‘Dudus’ Manoja beat Team OJ 9-8 in the final.
The Basketball 3X3 Competition was one of the activities lined up for the IDUS Celebrations.
Other games that are set to be played include rugby, Tennis and handball.
The 3X3 teams comprised of students from Makerere Universitiy and other Universities, Alumni, players of some of the clubs in FUBA and community members.
These teamed up against each other in a round robin format that was used to play and there was a winner in both categories that’s the male and female team.
The Head of Games Union Makerere Emmanuel Aupal, stated: “Since one of the aims of the IDUS Celebrations is to create links between Universities and local communities, we found it wise to have basketball because it brings together lots of people, uniting a lot of people and also keeping athletes in position since we have had little physical sport .
“The Games were also aimed to prepare the students ahead of November’s 4th FASU 3X3 Basketball Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.”
Other events lined up in celebration of IDUS are Rugby on Friday at the Makerere University Graveyard, Tennis on Saturday, Handball on Sunday and a University Sports quiz on Monday.
The select sports for the event are in preparation for the Kings of Africa Rugby 7s tournament set to take place in October at Makerere University.
The 3×3 teams are also expected to travel to Kenya for the FISU 3×3 games later this year in October.
