Boxing National Team Trials Reach Final Bend

The Boxing National Team Trials will conclude today, Saturday October 2 at Lugogo.

The trials have been ongoing at Lugogo from September 25 where about 500 fighters have taken part.

The Uganda Boxing Federation is using these trials to pick fighters for the upcoming inaugural Champions League and National team ahead of international engagements like Commonwealth games.

The top four fighters, semi finalists to be exact, in each weight storm the inaugural Champions League which will be held at a later date this year.

The fights for Men’s Elite category all concluded on Friday, while the Junior and Youth will end on Saturday.

The Girls will also enter the ring on Saturday.

On Friday, 2020 Tokyo Olympian David Ssemujju won by RSC (Referee Stop Contest) in round one against Denis Okello in the middle weight category to reach the semis.

Yusuf Nkobeza of Nakawa Boxing Club won his Quarter Finals bout in just seconds, against Kyego Kelvin of Mutajjazi BC in a Middle Weight category.

Male Joshua defeated Denis Mulindra of Gulu while Mukibi Idris of Kololo ousted George Bwayo in Light middle weight among other fights.

Earlier on Thursday, Olympian David Ssemujju beat Muzamir Semuddu in Light middle weight.

Isaac Ssenyange Junior, son to the late Zebra Mando, beat Nicholas Katongole to reach the semis.

Stanley Mugerwa in light middle weight beat Haruna Sematire of Police Boxing Club.

The competitions have marked the return of Boxing in the country since 2019.
