The Uganda National Women’s team, the Crested Cranes, have been eliminated from this year’s 2021 COSAFA Women’s Championship following their 1-0 defeat to Zambia on Tuesday.
Zambia’s Captain Grace Chanda’s first half strike in the 37th minute was the only difference that sent the Crested Cranes home packing.
Despite registering a 5-1 victory against Eswatini in their second group game, George Lutalo”s side needed nothing but victory to storm the semis.

Zambia now join South Africa and Tanzania who progressed from group A and B respectively to storm the semi finals.
The Crested Cranes loss also meant that Malawi is the other team to storm the Semis as the second best team selected from the three groups. Malawi had registered 6 points from their group A that also had defending Champions South Africa.
Zambia who qualified to the 2014 and 2018 Africa Championship, have also reached at the semis of the COSAFA in the last four appearances. They were semi finalists last year, beaten at the finals by South Africa in 2019, third and fourth in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
Uganda who were guests at this tournament were appearing for the second time at this Championship. Their first appearance came in 2018 and they finished third.
The Crested Cranes will now shift their focus to the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations Qualifiers where they will play Ethiopia at the first round phase.
