The Brief

Rwanda Amavubi Stars play host to Uganda Cranes at Kigali Stadium (Nyamirambo) on Thursday in Group E of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Both sides will be seeking for their first win after a slow start in the campaign.

Rwanda lost away to Mali 1-0 and later drew with Kenya for their only point so far.

Uganda Cranes on the other hand, have drawn goalless in their two games against Kenya and Mali.

This is an East Africa derby with a lot at stake, and the two teams will meet again in the same competition at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.

Micho Banking On Familiarity with Rwanda

Uganda Cranes coaching Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredejovich said that his wide knowledge about Rwandese football will help him get the positive results in the double header.

On November 1 2011, Micho was unveiled as the head coach of Rwanda, a job he held until he was fired on April 17 2013.

During that spell, he was assisted by Vincent Mashami who is currently the head coach.

“I have respect for coach Vincent Mashami and Rwanda as a national team,” Micho said Tuesday before the team left Kampala.

“I gave 80% of the players on their national team an opportunity to play for the Amavubi Stars. I know these players very well and I know what they think.

“I respect Mashami as my student and I want to show that the Professor has not forgotten his teachings.”

Uganda goes to Rwanda with Khalid Aucho as the captain after striker Emmanuel Okwi was not included in the squad due to lack of fitness causes by his inability to get a new team since leaving Egypt’s Ittihad.

Defender Murushid Juuko is serving a red Card suspension he got against Mali while Bevis Mugabi is the only foreign based of the 10 invited who did not turn up after he was denied travel by his Scottish club Motherwell.

Taddeo Lwanga (Simba), Fahad Bayo and Timothy Awany of Ashdod FC in Israel FC have been added to the team after missing the first two games.

Rwanda Buzzing With Confidence

Rwanda is aware what this derby means and are confident that they can get maximum points on board against a Uganda team that is devoid of quality and experience unlike their previous squads.

Coach Mashami, as quoted by FERWAFA: “We are ready to face Uganda. That in itself makes Thursday’s game more extraordinary.”

“We will do our best to take the three points. We are looking forward to beating Uganda and we are better prepared than ever. We assure all our fans that they will watch a good Rwandan side that is aiming to win.”

Captain Haruna Niyonzima also revealed how important this game against Uganda is: “We have a very strong game or is it a‘ derby’ as we like to say. It is a game that is of great value to us and we hope that we will do our best and come back victorious.”

“If we win this game we know we will go ahead of Uganda, so that’s what we’ve put so much emphasis on.”

Rwanda will be without midfielder Djihad Bizimana who plays in Belgium after he tested positive for Covid19.

However, Mashami will feel that he has enough armoury to trouble Uganda Cranes.

Head To Head

Uganda and Rwanda will be facing off for the 34th meeting.

Rwanda has won 10, drawn 9 and while Uganda has 14 wins.

The last meeting between the two sides was earlier this year in the CHAN which ended goalless.
