Uganda’s participants at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics have reaped big, again.

National Council of Sports has extended financial rewards to the medallists and participants as well.

NCS General Secretary Dr Bernard Patrick Ogwel said that the move is a token of appreciation to these athletes who raised the national flag high.

In an event at Lugogo, Gold medallists were awarded with Sh50m, Silver medallists took Sh30m while Sh20m to Bronze medallists.

Everyone who participated at the games will bank Sh1m.

At the Olympics, Uganda finished second behind Kenya in Africa and 35th overall after winning four medals – Joshua Cheptegei (5000m gold, 10000m silver), Peruth Chemutai (3000m steeplechase gold) and Jacob Kiplimo (10000m silver).

David Emong won bronze at the Paralympic games.

“The journey to Tokyo was a bumpy ride. We had budget cuts, there were two Covid19 cases in the pre training camp and one of our athletes disappeared in the It was not smooth, but we managed to come back with good success,” said State Minister of Sports Hon Hamson Obua.

“Those who work hard deserve to be rewarded, and this is a testament that Sport is no longer a liability but now a national asset.

“My advice to the athletes is that this is your time but there is a saying that ‘athletes come and go’ so endeavour to invest and save wisely.”

Obua said that there is enormous talent in Uganda and commended the Baby Cricket Cranes that recently qualified to the 2022 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup.

Speaking in reception, Cheptegei who won Gold and Silver at the games said: “This is a special reward. Its out of this gesture that can make us stars. Sports is nolonger leisure but business, Now is the time that young people can know that they can earn a living from this.”

Paralympian David Emong commented: “I thank the governement for this, my life will not remain the same. My mission is not yet accomplished and I want to take on the paralympic World Record in the next games.”

Chemutai said that she is going to use part of the money to complete her house.

It should be remembered that President Museveni awarded Cheptegei, Chemutai and Kiplimo with brand new vehicles to appreciate the trio for delivering medals for the country.
