Police Seek To Settle Score With Vipers

Police FC will have revenge at the back of their minds when they host Vipers in their opening tie of the Uganda Premier League.

Vipers eliminated Police out of the Uganda Cup on their way to winning the title last month at Njeru.

Last season, the only league meeting between the two sides made headings for the wrong reasons – Police chairman AIGP Kasingye stormed the pitch-line in protest of Derrick Ochan’s red card.

Kasingye later tweeted that Vipers SC must be ‘banned for life’ and accused the Venoms of bribing referees.

A season at back, at Lugogo, Police coach Abdallah Mubiru accused Vipers right back Paul Willa, a former Police FC player, of entering his camp to bribe his goalkeeper Hilary Jomi

Jomi had intentionally let Willa’s long range effort to cross the goal line for Vipers’ equaliser in the game the Venoms later won 3-1.

The game between Vipers and Police has never been a dull moment, but the latter have barely enjoyed success.

Whether now is the best time for the Cops to take revenge, remains to be seen.

Police FC’s gradual fall from title contenders to dropping into sixth place last season left many with some unanswered questions.

But the right answer to almost every question rotated around the players lack of motivation due to delayed salaries.

That issue has not been solved and the club saw some of their key players leave including Ben Ocen, Derrick Kakooza, Denis Rukundo, Henry Kisekka, Derrick Ochan and Henry Katongole while Frank Zaga Tumwesigye’s whereabouts are unknown.

Brian Muluri was convinced to stay and it is not known whether he will be delivering at 100%.

Their biggest addition has been Juma Balinya who returns to the club where he was the League top scorer for the 2018-2019 season when he scored 19 goals.

Right back Eddie Kapampa and Arafat Kakonge are good additions but most of other new signings like Timothy Muwanguzi (Old Kampala SS), Ismail Kyambadde (Luwero United), Paul Wasswa (Lugazi Municipal), Isaac Kiberu (Edgars), Bernard Kateregga (Buwambo United), Diego Semugera (Lugazi Municipal) and John Kitanda (Najja B) lack league experience.

Vipers on the other hand, have a new man in charge – Coach Roberto Oliveira Concalves.

The Brazillian start their league campaign against Police, the same side he faced in his first competitive game (Uganda Cup).

Robertinho was animated and looked to have gelled well with his players during Uganda Cup.

Vipers have been a quiet side in the transfers and have retained almost their entire squad from last season besides Rashid Toha, Bashir Ssekagya, Abraham Ndugwa and Shaban Muhammad.

They announced the addition of Angolan striker Nelito Jose Tavares on Saturday while Bright Anukani has been an influential addition to improve on the team’s creativity right through the middle.

Robertinho will be well aware of how hot his Vipers seat is after the manner in which his predecessors lost their jobs but he will fancy his side to get things going thanks to the quality in depth of the Vipers squad.

Note – Police’s last win against Vipers came on October 14 2017. Hood Kawesa bagged a double to cancel out Milton Karisa’s opener for a then Miguel Da Costa’s coached side. Current Vipers right back Paul Willa was a Police player then.
