USPA To Celebrate Best of Ugandan Sports Journalism

Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) will reward journalism excellency this year at the inaugural media awards.

The association is an umbrella body that brings together sports journalists in Uganda.

USPA president Patrick Kanyomozi has said that the awards will recognise the exceptional work done by Sports Journalists.

He added: “We want to encourage sports journalists and uplift the reporting standards.”

The awards, open to all sport journalists currently working for local media, have been split into eight categories including the Paul Waibale senior award (Sports Column Writing).

Kanyomozi explained: “The awards have been named after departed members of the association as a mark of appreciation for their contribution towards sports journalism. The awards name shall change every year.”

Nile Breweries, under their brand Nile Special, are the main sponsors and Kanyomozi has called on other corporate institutions to come on board.

The work must have been published between November 1 2020 to October 31 2021 with proof of publication. Submissions start on November 1 2021 and will end on November 10 2021 at 11pm with a link to be provided.

“Only three nominees shall be named per category and only one will be announced winner at a ceremony in December 2021. The winner will receive a custom designed plaque,” added Kanyomozi.

The Eight Categories

Bashir Khan Lugudo Award
Best Sports News Report (TV, Radio, Print and Online
)
Open to newspaper, magazine and website, television or radio Sports Journalists. Entries to comprise three (3) examples of work or a series on one topic. Stories will be judged on style, strength, quality, written expression and impact.

The James Opoka Award
Best Sports News Report – Broadcast (Radio and Television)

Open to all television and radio sports journalists, Entries to comprise three (3) examples of Sports events coverage which demonstrates excellence in stories/covering issues and events. Entries will be judged on news value, impact, content and diversity.

The Edirisa Mayanja Njuki Award
Best Sports News Report – Print

Open to only newspaper or magazine sports writers. Entries to comprise three (3) examples of sports event coverage which demonstrates excellence in stories/covering issues and events. Entries will be judged on news value, impact, content and diversity.

The John Bugembe Ssenkubuge Award
Best Sports Photograph

This category is judged by the outstanding single picture. The selected choice shall in the opinion of judges be the photo that depicts a moment of excellence or athletic skill from a particular sporting event. Entrants shall send only three (3) pictures that were published either in newspapers, in a magazine or online.

The Samuel Wossita Award
Best Digital Sports Production (Websites, E-journal, Podcasts)

This category is open to websites, areas of websites and all digital platforms covering sports stories and sporting events. Successful entries should demonstrate good digital production and design of the coverage, and the ways in which digital, social, mobile and other platforms are employed to reach, inform and engage with the audience.

The Kevin Aliro Award
Investigative Sports Report

The annual award recognises a sports journalist who uncovers a key issue in sports. Works will be judged on accuracy, ethics, tenacity and public benefit.

The Paul Waibale Award
Sports Column Writing

This category covers sports opinion writing and work addressed to a broadsheet readership around the various areas of Sports. The works should be the must-read kind, unique and with the ability to provoke debate

The Andrew Luwandagga Award
Lifetime in service

A lifetime recognition award for a sports journalist who has demonstrated passion and excellence as well as contributed enormously to the field of sports journalism throughout their career. The winner shall be decided by the USPA Executive Committee.
