Black Pearls Crowned 2021 Women Rugby 7s Champions

The 3rd Women’s Rugby Circuit took place in Entebbe at the Home of the Avengers and Mongers, Busambaga Pitch known as the House of pain stadium.

The circuits that started on the 10th of October at Kingsway Park in Bweyogerere, through the weekend of 17th October at Kyaddondo Rugby Grounds finally came to an end on the 24th at the Busambaga pitch in Entebbe.

This is the first time the women’s rugby 7s Circuits have taken place solely away from the men’s games.

The games were in two different tiers I and II based on the age and years of experience in the game.

Black Pearls took the lead in all the three circuits for tier I and Blue Whales topped tier II across all the circuits.

Coach Hellen Buteme attributed the success to the hardwork of the players and the intensive conditioning they are subjected to. The lockdown was an opportunity time for the team to work more on the conditioning of the players. “We used to share workout plans and each player was expected to share a video working out. This helped me assess the players and understand where we needed to grow and develop” stated coach Helen.

The National Rugby 15s are underway in November and Coach Helen expressed intentions of coming strong despite the size disadvantage the team has. “The Black Pearls players are small in size which is a setback for us but we are going to build and utilize our strengths; rugby skills and speed.”

In attendance at the final circuit, was the Division I Chairman, Amanyire Moses who promised continued support to the sport in the area through availability of facilities for training and organizing a tournament.

The Uganda Rugby Union President, Godwin Kayangwe was in attendance and promised continued support for the growth of women’s rugby.
