CECAFA Women U20: Uganda Rolls Over Burundi

Saturday, October 30
•Tanzania 1-0 Eritrea
•Djibouti 0-7 Ethiopia
•Uganda 5-1 Burundi

Hosts Uganda got their CECAFA Women’s U20 Championship off to a winning start thanks to a commanding win over Djibouti at FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.

Captain Fauziah Najjemba bagged a brace while Hadijah Nandago, Margret Kunihira and Shamirah Nalugya scored a goal each to get off the mark.

Najjemba set Nandago to open the scores before Kunihira scored a beauty from a tight right angle.

Then Najjemba raced on Biira Nadunda’s defence split pass, showed composure to calmly slot past the goalkeeper and put the game far beyond Burundi’s reach.

However, Pascie Butoyi brought one back for the visitors after calamitous defending from Uganda, and give Burundi a fighting chance before the break.

Burundi proved compact in the second half and were equally good going forward.

But Najjemba later ran behind the defence to finish beautifully at close range and Nalugya got her name on the scoresheet with a long range effort that eluded the goalkeeper.

Najjemba was granted with a hat-trick opportunity when she was brought down into the area but her resultant penalty kick ricocheted off the woodwork.

Coach Ayub Khalifa will be happy with the result but may slightly be sad with the manner in which his side gave away the goal and how Uganda looked stagnant in some stretches and failed to press high up the pitch when Burundi enjoyed possession.

Uganda return to action on Monday against Djibouti in the day’s first game at 10:30am. The six-team inaugural tournament is played on a round robin format and the top team after five rounds will be declared champion.

Earlier, Tanzania needed a late Clara Luvanga strike im added time to overcome a resilient Eritrea in the first game while Ridet Assrasang starred with a hat-trick in Ethiopia’s 7-0 win over ten-man Djibouti.
