Invite Basketball: Betway Power Struggles On Day One

Saturday, October 31
*UCU Canons 74-72 UPDF Tomahawks
*Falcons 78-69 Betway Power

Betway Power got off to a poor start at their own Invitational basketball tournament at the YMCA court in Wandegeya.

Power were beaten by Falcons 78-69 in a closely contested affair.

They led by 19:18 after the first quarter but surrendered their slender lead to trail by 10 points at the long break.

Falcons managed to maintain their lead through the 3rd quarter and 4th quarter to win the tie 78-69.

Power coach Turinawe Ankunda said after the game: “As a team we have been together for barely three weeks and most of the players are young and new to league. This is actually their first competitive tournament. We have players who are 18, 19 and 20 years so I do give them credit for their performance.”

The Man of the Match for the Power-Falcons game was Ayiko Gerald of Falcons who had 18 points.

UCU canons managed to overcome UPDF Tomahawks to get off the mark.

UCU led 33-32 at halftime but trailed by three points going into the last quarter, however, they managed to stage a fight back to outlast UPDF 78-72.

The man of the Match was Sifuma Peter of UCU canons with 12 points.

The UPDF captain, Muhumuza Moses, reassured us that he is confident his team is coming strong for the next games as this was just a stepping stone for the next one.

“Our performance has not been so bad as we went head to toe throughout the game. We shall definitely win our next game.”

Lukaire Samuel, the UCU assistant coach was pleased with the performance and believes that his team can ably perform even better.

Lukaire commented: “Our performance today was average as most of our players are still shaky since they haven’t played in a long time. We have been having team practice and this is an advantage to us.”

Each game was started with a moment of silence to pay tribute to the departed Ugandan Basketball players and officials.

Each team was presented with a crate of beer and the man of the Match with a box of water.

Schedule for the next games that will take place next Saturday.
