Preview: Can Vipers Pass Mbarara test?

Vipers SC will be making a long trip to the West as they face Mbarara City at the Kakyeka Stadium on Friday in a tricky tie.

Statistics are not on the their side as they are winnless in their last six league meetings against the Ankole Lions. Infact, Vipers lost twice against Mbarara City 3-2 at home and 1-0 at Kakyeka last season.

The trip is a big test for head coach Robertinho Oliveira, who faces a side that has always been stubborn when playing the Kitende based side.

Ahead of the tie, the Brazilian gaffer predicts a tough contest but is optimistic his side will collect maximum points on Friday.

“We prepared very well our team for this game because we are playing away from home. I know very well this team, I think it won’t be an easy game but I set a condition with my players for winning, I prepared them to win,” Oliveira said ahead of the contest.

If given a chance, Paul Mucuurezi and Ibrahim Orit will again point guns to their former employees.

Vipers, bossing with the two hottest forwards in the league – Yunus Sentamu and Caesar Manzoki – have been in terrific form this season.

They have won three and came from down to draw against defending champions Express at Wankulukuku.

On the other side, Mbarara will be targeting to return to winning ways having lost their last two league games against BUL FC and UPDF respectively.

Against Vipers, they welcome a side that has not picked any win in Mbarara since 2018.

Ahead of the contest, Hussein Mbalangu, the interim manager at the club said: “It’s always a competitive game because Vipers is one of the biggest clubs in the country, but we are also a stronger side and I think we are bigger than Vipers. They are the underdogs because they always panic against Mbarara. We respect but we don’t fear them and we are ready for them, so we need three points.”

Mbalangu’s charges will build on the fact that they picked maximum points in their first two opening games of the season despite the poor run away from home.

Former Vipers forward Henry Kitegenyi will again be called upon to lift his side as he has always done when they face the Venoms.
