FUBA Confirms Silverbacks Withdrawal From World Cup Qualifiers

The Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) has confirmed that the Silverbacks will not be taking part in the upcoming 2023 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers first window later this month.

The Federation has stated that they have failed to secure funds from the Government to facilitate the trip to Benguela in Angola.

“FUBA on a very sad note wishes to inform you that the Senior Men’s National Basketball team (The Silverbacks) will not compete at the FIBA World Qualifiers – window 1 I Benguela (Angola) from 26-28 November,” reads a statement in part.

“FUBA was informed Government of Uganda, through the National Council of Sports (NCS) that there was no money to support the team for this particular campaign. The team needed approximately Ugx380m to make this trip.

“Having put up a splendid performance at the Afrobasket finals in Kigali(Rwanda) recently and making the quarterfinals, finishing no.6 overall, this team had a genuine chance to be among the top 5 countries in Africa and make the World Cup for the first time in the history of Uganda Basketball. The team has been undergoing intensive training on a daily basis in preparation for this campaign.”

Uganda were pitted in a Pool that has Nigeria, Mali, Cape Verde.

The Silverbacks team of locally based players had started training on November 15 at Africa ln Bible University in Lubowa.
