Uganda’s National Basketball team, the Silverbacks, has in the wee hours of Thursday morning left for Benguela, Angola for the first Window of the 2023 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers.
FUBA had recently confirmed the team’s withdrawal from the tournament after failing to secure the funds from Government to facilitate the trip.
However, FUBA President Nasser Sserunjogi held a meeting on Tuesday with State Minister for Sports Hon Hamson Obua and like they ‘the rest is history’.
The Qualifiers, where Uganda will meet Mali, Cape Verde and Nigeria, will tip off on November 26.
Uganda will hope to build on recent Afrobasket success in Kigali where the team finished sixth overall.
These are qualification pathways to determine the five African teams that will take part at the 2023 FIBA World Cup to be held in Indonesia, Japan, Philippines.
Uganda will be targeting to finish among the top three teams in Group A to advance to the second round.
In the Second round, the top three teams from all the four groups will be divided into two groups of six teams.
With all results from the previous round carried to the next round, the two best placed teams from both groups plus third placed team with better record will qualify for the World Cup.
The team of nine locally based players will be joined by four foreign-based players of Brandon Davis, Eric Rwahwire, Womala Timothy and Robinson Opong.
Only Deng Geu, who recently joined Texas Legends, has not made the squad from the initial team that was summoned.
