Preview – Can SC Villa Put Up A Challenge?

SC Villa welcome KCCA FC as the two most successful Uganda teams meet at Njeru in a league game on Saturday.

Both teams he shared the Uganda Premier League title 29 times, with SC Villa taking the lion’s share of 16.

But gone are the days when such a fixture held water!

And now, 17 points separate runaway leaders KCCA from struggling SC Villa, a gap which may go to a whopping 20 by the close of the day.

The tie comes at a challenging time for Villa who are contemplating sacking Head coach Petros Koukouras and are winless in last four games after surrendering a Two-Goal lead in a 2-2 draw with Arua Hill.

“We have many positives. I know things have not been particularly good for us this season but people like to focus on the negatives rather than positives,” Koukouras stated.

“For my team I see a steady progress from the beginning of the season. In Arua we gave a big battle against a team that was much more experienced and much taller than us but we won most of the air duels. I want to keep that and the passion we had in that game.

“We know KCCA has a very strong team and they are the favorites in this game but we have a huge motivation to be the first team to beat them this season.”

Koukouras added: “The truth is that we concede easy goals. We have dropped so many points lately because of late goals. In the last 3 games only instead of 7 points we managed to collect only 2 because of that issue. Is something that we work on it but also it comes with experience. None of these goals were from open play. All of them were from set pieces.”

KCCA FC are yet to lose a game this season but their only worry is that they miss a couple of players including the four that were suspended by FUFA over ugly incidents at Kitende against Vipers.

But KCCA FC coach Morley Byekwaso is adamant that his side will leave Njeru unscathed.

“We want to go all out and maintain the current form we have had this season. We know Villa have some young lads that are good on the ball and we have prepared well for them,” Byekwaso is quoted by the club media.

“This is a derby and games like these are never easy. So much anticipation and the magnitude of the game sometimes comes into play. I have tasked my players to manage the game very well and ensure we pick three points.”

Last season, SC Villa became the first team to beat KCCA FC – Brian Aheebwa’s goal proved to be a consolation after Ronald Ssekiganda and Nicholas Kabonge had put Villa ahead at Bombo.
