Busoga United FC skipper Anthony Mayanja is confident and believes that his side is going to put up a big fight to survive relegation in the Uganda Premier League.

Busoga United ended the first round in red zone; 15th position with only 11 points collected from 15 games, two points adrift of safety.

“As a team, we have performed poorly, we haven’t achieved our target in first round because we wanted like 18 points,” said Mayanja in an exclusive interview with The-SportsNation.

“But we expect to put up a big fight to move out of relegation zone come the second round.

“I have trust and belief that we are going to fight to help this team survive relegation, however, we need to strengthen our backline and the forward line as well. “

Mayanja replaced George Kasonko, who joined BUL FC, as the Busoga United captain.

Busoga United season has been marred by administrative struggles that recently saw Club chairman Hassan Takoowa throw in a towel and the club also missed coach Abbey Bogere Kikomeko the closing stages of the first round due to sickness.

It should be remember that even last season, the Jinja based side just survived relegation by a whisker after fishing three points above relegation; occupying 13th position with only 26 points in 26 games, before the league was called off with only four games left to play due to Covid-19.

Busoga United, formerly known as Kirinya Jinja SS, was promoted in Uganda Premier League in 2016/17 season after topping Rwenzori group in FUFA Big league with 52 points from 23 games, earning direct promotion on a final league match day following a 3-2 come back win against Wandegeya FC, to avoid play off where they had been denied on two consecutive times.

Since then, the side has never been relegated back and it has been rare to see them fighting relegation except their debut season where they ended the season with only one point above the drop and in last season where they finished with just only 3 points above the red drop which was their worst performance since promotion.

Their best performance came in 2019/20 season after finishing 4th with 41 points, however their best points came in their second season into the premier league, where they ended the season with 43 points even though they ended in 5th position .
