Ghana captain Andrew Ayew scored a beauty but it was not enough as the Black Stars played out a 1-1 draw with Gabon in a Group C match at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaounde.

Ayew made a swift turn to free himself from Anthony Henri before launching a rocket that eluded Gabon keeper Noel Amonome in the 18th minute.

But Gabon, without influential captain Pierre Aubameyang, found a late equaliser in the 88th minute thanks to Ngowet Allevinah.

“I hope we win the next game against Comoros; four points will be enough to move on. We are Ghana and we will win the next game, God willing,” said Ayew after the 1-1 draw on Friday.

Ghana, now on one point in third place after coming into the game following a loss to Morocco in their opener, failed to find a winner and their fate was sealed in added minutes when Benjamin Tetteh was sent off.

The four-time champions, who last won AFCON in 1982, will have to beat Comoros on Tuesday in their last group game or else face an early exit.

In the other Group C game, Selim Amallah and Soufiane Chakla scored on either half to as Morocco beat Comoros 2-0 to seal a place in the round of 16.
