Algeria’s Unbeaten Run Ended With Two Games Shy of Italy’s World Record

Sunday, December 16
*Algeria 0-1 Equatorial Guinea

Defending champions Algeria suffered a shock defeat to Equatorial Guinea in Group E of the 2021 AFCON in Douala, falling short of a World record!

Esteban Fernandez scored the only goal, striking in the 70th minute, in a closely contested affair.

The result ends Algeria’s unbeaten run that had seen the Desert Warriors go 35 matches without a loss.

Italy holds the record for most games played without a loss – 37.

The Azzuri’z run was ended in October last year after a 2-1 semifinal loss to Spain in Milan in the UEFA Nations League.

Algeria who drew goalless with Sierra Leone earlier, had joined both Spain and Brazil in second place on the table for longest unbeaten run at 35.

“It’s not the expected result and yet we did everything, we got several chances but the ball did not go in. We are in a situation of failure, it is a lean moment,” said Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi.

“Football is not always about rational reasons but let’s be sure, we will fight to stay in this competition. It will be against a great team from Côte d’Ivoire which is made up of players playing in the biggest leagues. Regarding the opponent, Equatorial Guinea, they defended with a lot of desire, determination and we couldn’t find the fault, it’s a situation of failure.”

Algeria must beat Ivory Coast in their final Group E game to have a chance of reaching the last 16.
