Hosts Cameroon and Burkina Faso sailed through to the semis of the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after winning their respective Quarterfinal ties on Saturday.

Cameroon managed to overcome debutants Gambia in the first of the quarterfinals thanks to Karl Toko Ekambi’s second half brace at Japoma Stadium, Douala.

After an equally contested first half, Ekambi headed in Fai Collins cross just five minutes after restart before doubling the lead seven minutes later to send the home crowd into wild celebrations.

“I’m proud of the performance of the team tonight, Gambia are a difficult team to play but we never gave up even when we struggled in first half. We kept working and we got the crack,” said Ekambi who was named Man of the match.

“It’s good, everyone has a role to play in this team, in 2017, I played a lot less, it’s not the case today, it’s the victory at the end that is the most important. We are a family, the group lives well. The group prefers to focus on the present, this competition and not focus on the past with what happened in 1972, we want to write our own history.”

It was an improved performance from Cameroon who struggled against a depleted Comoros side in the round of 16 and the Indomitable Lions will now fancying their chances when they meet winner between Egypt and Morocco, in the semis.

In the other game, Dango Aboubacar Ouattara’s goal sent Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles packing as Burkina Faso’s Stallions progressed to the semis.

It was a mixed night for Ouattara at Omnisport Roumde stadium in Garoua after the youngster was sent after a VAR check following an elbow in the closing stages of the game.

He will consequently miss his side’s semifinal clash against either Senegal or Equatorial Guinea who meet in Sunday’s last semifinal.
