Nkumba Lady Marines beat Kampala University Ladies 51-49 to clinch their first win in the National Basketball League this season.
Nkumba had lost all their 14 games this season coming into Sunday’s game at YMCA court in Wandegeya.
And it looked like they were on course for a 15th straight loss when Kampala University led by seven points inside the last quarter.
But Nkumba fought back, and midway through the quarter, Patience Mauso held her nerves to convert both free throws and tie the game at 41-41.
The lead exchanged hands from thereafter, but with Kampala University leading by just a point, Mauso then scored a jumper before Nancy Sombei made one of the two free throws down the stretch to win by just two points.
Jesca Nakamya carried more weight with a double double of 10 points and 11 rebounds while Patience Mauso and Mellisa Kyazze added 9 points each for the Lady Marines.
Mercy Batamuliza scored 20 points and 29 rebounds, Anywanzwa Lydia scored 17 points while none of the Kampala University players reached five points!
It has been a difficult spell for Kampala University since Maggie Baagala left for She Cranes duty.
And this is their 10th loss of the season in 14 games for a side that beat Nkumba 60-54 on April 10.
For Nkumba, the win is a bright spot in a season they have barely threatened, highlighted by humbling losses a against JKL Lady Dolphins (130-49) and KIU Rangers (96-42).
The result blows the relegation contest wide open, with other candidates Angels on three wins while A1, Nabisunsa and Kampala University still on four wins.
