Uganda Reach Quarterfinals at Street Child Cricket World Cup

Uganda’s team at the Street Child World Cup ongoing in Chennai India progressed to the quarter finals after their spotless display in the group stages.

The team composed of eight players opened the event with a 6-wicket win over Rwanda on Monday before following that victory with four more in their group on Wednesday.

All teams took a one-day break on Tuesday, but on their return to action, Uganda first dealt with Mexico in Group B’s opening game of the day.

Inspired by Jonathan Nyiiro’s batting, Uganda beat Mexico by 6 wickets.

Mexico set the target at 21! With no difficulty, Uganda chased it in 5 balls. Nyiiro scored the team’s highest runs- 15.

England presented opposition in the next game, and here, team captain Gerald Olipa and Lorna Anyait were the run getters for the team.

Uganda batted first in this game and put on board 85 runs. Olipa notched 15 while Anyait came out with the highest score of 28.

Despite exhausting their Overs, England were unable to stage a successful chase as Uganda won the game by 37 runs.

Uganda then turned their attention to Nepal who they beat by 6 wickets. Nepal in their innings scored 38; Uganda got the job done inside the 3rd Over.

Emmanuel Isaneez’s team then wrapped up the day with a 30-run with over Zimbabwe.

With Olipa registering 20 runs, the side was able to defend their total of 62 as Zimbabwe managed only 32 in their five Overs.

The results mean Uganda advance to the quarter finals with a 100% record in the group stages.

As Group B winners, Uganda will face the 3rd placed team in Group A in the next round. That will either be South Africa or Sri Lanka depending on how Group A pans out on Friday.

The Quarter finals will take center stage on Saturday.
