Uganda’s journey at the Paris 2024 Africa Olympics Qualifiers came to a crashing end following their 9-1 loss to Egypt in the semifinals on Friday.
Uganda who found their way to the semifinals through only a forfeited win against Nigeria went down in the 15th minute, and as things would unfold, it was the beginning of a miserable afternoon in Pretoria.
Egypt ended the first period with just that goal, but by the end of the first halft, they were counting four.
They added two in the third period, and completed their routine victory with three more in the last period.
Maxwell Mugisha who turns up for Weatherhead in the national league scored Uganda’s lone goal as the Hockey Cranes bowed out of the competition with no on field win.
The defeat means Uganda who were appearing at this competition for only the second time ended the tournament with 22 conceded goals and just two scored.
It is a big improvement from their maiden appearance in 2007 in Nairobi, Kenya where they let in 67 while netting just one.
Uganda will now turn their attention to the bronze medal game that will happen on Sunday.
The Hockey Cranes will face either Ghana or South Africa- who meet later today in the second semifinal- to determine their final position in this edition’s Qualifiers.
