For the first time since it’s inception in 1965, The All-African Games, now simply known as the African Games will feature cricket.
The gentleman’s game has for the last 13 editions not been among the sports in this continental competition, but it’s been included, and will now be among the 35 sports that will be the center of attention in March in Accra, Ghana.
Uganda will be among the countries that will debut the game at the African Games. Uganda Cricket Association will send both their men’s team, the Cricket Cranes and the women’s team, the Victoria Pearls to Ghana for this multi-sport event.
Uganda have already learned their group opponents. At the Achimota Complex, the Victoria Pearls have been pitted against Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Kenya in Group B. Group A has South Africa, Namibia, Tanzania and Nigeria.
In the Men’s section, the Cricket Cranes will face South Africa, Kenya and the hosts Ghana in Group A. Group B of this section has Namibia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Nigeria.
The tournament gets underway on 5th March with the teams’ arrivals, but the Victoria Pearls will bowl off the competition against rivals Kenya on 7th March at Achimota A.
Like the Victoria Pearls, the Cricket Cranes get the tournament underway against bitter rivals Kenya on 17th March at Achimota B.
Both teams will use this tournament to horn their craft in preparations for the big competitions they will both be involved in, in 2024.
While the Victoria Pearls will be heading to Dubai in April for the ICC Women’s World Cup Global Qualifiers, the Cricket Cranes will head to the United States/West Indies to take part in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup- their first ever appearance at the World Cup- in June.
The African Games come in handy as regards to the two team’s preparations.
