In a devastating turn of events, the Ugandan athletics community is mourning the loss of Benjamin Kiplagat, a revered figure in middle and long-distance running, whose life was tragically cut short on Sunday, December 31st, 2023.
Kiplagat’s lifeless body, bearing grievous knife wounds to the neck, was discovered inside his brother’s car near Kimumu Secondary School along Eldoret – Iten Road in Kenya.
Hailing from Eldoret and Iten, known hotspots for elite runners, Kiplagat was a familiar figure among his contemporaries, including Boniface Kiprop and Chepkirwok Abraham.
His journey in athletics began in Uganda, where he attended Rubongi Secondary School in Tororo before furthering his education at Standard High School in Zana.
Kiplagat’s athletic prowess was first recognized by the late Treasurer of Uganda Athletics Federation, Godfrey Nuwagaba, who played a pivotal role in shaping Kiplagat’s career.
Born on March 4th, 1989, Benjamin Kiplagat made significant strides as a middle and long-distance runner.
He reached his peak with Standard Athletics Club and Global Sport Management under Nuwagaba’s guidance before eventually relocating to Iten, Kenya, for intensive training, owing to its reputation as a training hub for world-class athletes.
Kiplagat’s impressive career spanned numerous international competitions, representing Uganda in multiple Olympic cycles and World Championships, showcasing his talent on global stages such as Rio de Janeiro, London, Beijing, Doha, and other prominent cities across the world.
His notable achievements include setting Uganda’s U20 National Record in the steeplechase and securing medals at various championships, contributing to Uganda’s presence on the international athletics scene.
Kiplagat’s notable performances spanned World Cross Country Championships, World Junior Championships, Africa Senior Championships, Commonwealth Games, and several invitational events, leaving an indelible mark on Ugandan athletics.
As the sports fraternity grapples with the shocking loss, the Uganda Athletics Federation and the entire athletics community extend their deepest sympathies to Benjamin Kiplagat’s family, friends, and loved ones during this trying time.
