Wakiso Giants put a brake on KCCA FC’s impressive run with a 2-1 win in a league game played at Kabaka Kyabaggu stadium in Wakissha.
The Purple Sharks benefited from KCCA FC’s mistakes to punish Abdallah Mubiru’s boys.
And in the end, Ashraf Mugume’s late freekick proved a mere consolation after Kenneth Kimera and Samson Kigozi had already done the damage.
Kimera dispossessed Rogers Atube, ran free on goal, before slotting past KCCA goalkeeper Derrick Ochan for the game’s only goal in the first stanza.
Wakiso Giants doubled the lead at the hour mark when goalkeeper Ochan made a mess of Tom Masiko’s freekick when he spilled a tameable shot for Kigozi to automatically volley in a rebound.
Then in added time, Mugume scored a freekick that went in off the woodwork.
The defeat put an end to KCCA FC’s four-game winning run that had seen the side overcome Bright Stars, UPDF, SC Villa and URA FC.
The win lifts Wakiso Giants to 12th, notably out of the relegation zone as the side moves to 15 points, a point below KCCA in ninth position.
KCCA will start their second round with a home game against leaders BUL on February 9 while Wakiso Giants will the following day visit Bright Stars in a derby at Kavumba.
